The 76th Berlin International Film Festival concluded with the German-Turkish co-production "Yellow Letters" taking home the prestigious Golden Bear. Directed by Ilker Çatak, the film explores the struggles of an artist couple facing state oppression, a theme that resonated deeply with the jury.
Jury President Wim Wenders praised the film for its "empathetic language" that stands against the political rhetoric of autocratic regimes. He noted that the movie captures a chilling sense of dread that viewers worldwide will find hauntingly familiar, regardless of their specific geography.
While the film was shot in Germany, it is set in Turkey and features Turkish-language dialogue. This victory marks a significant milestone for German cinema, as it is the first time in 22 years that a German director has secured the festival's top prize.
Other major awards were distributed among international talents, including Turkey's Emin Alper and American director Lance Hammer. Notably, the festival saw repeat success for actress Sandra Hüller, who secured her second Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance.
The 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) reached its climax on February 21 (local time) with the announcement of the Golden Bear winner. "Yellow Letters," directed by Ilker Çatak, was hailed as the best film of the competition. The story focuses on the personal and professional crises of an artist couple living under the shadow of government crackdowns. The jury highlighted the film's ability to use human empathy to counter the harsh language of dictatorship.
Director Ilker Çatak, who is of Turkish descent but based in Germany, brought a unique cross-cultural perspective to the project. Although the production took place within Germany, the narrative remains firmly rooted in the Turkish experience, utilizing the Turkish language to maintain authenticity. This win is particularly historic for the host nation, ending a 22-year drought for German directors in the main competition.
The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize went to "Salvation" by Turkish director Emin Alper, while the Silver Bear Jury Prize was awarded to "Queen at Sea," a film by American director Lance Hammer depicting an elderly couple dealing with Alzheimer's in London. The Silver Bear for Best Director was presented to British filmmaker Grant Gee for his work on "Everyone Digs Bill Evans."
In the acting categories, Sandra Hüller won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance for her role in "Rose." This is Hüller's second time winning the prestigious acting award at Berlin. The Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance was shared by Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay for their roles in "Queen at Sea." The Best Screenplay award went to Canadian director Geneviève Dulude-De Celles for "Nina Roza." It was noted that no South Korean films were invited to the main competition category this year.
황금곰상hwanggeumgomsang (Hwang-geum-gom-sang) refers to the "Golden Bear," the top honor at the Berlin International Film Festival. The bear is the heraldic animal of Berlin, appearing on its coat of arms, which is why the trophy is shaped like a bear.
