The city of Daegu is experiencing an unexpected tourism boom thanks to the massive success of the film "The Man Who Lived with the King" (Wang-sa-nam). The movie, which has surpassed 14 million viewers, has reignited public interest in the historical figures associated with King Danjong.
In response to this popularity, Daegu City launched a special city tour course titled "Path of Loyalty, Historical JourneyβPeople Who Were with the King." The demand was so high during a pilot run that all 40 available spots were snapped up within just one hour.
Due to the overwhelming response and continuous inquiries from tourists who heard about the tour through word-of-mouth, the city has decided to expand the program. Eight additional tours have been scheduled to run from March 23rd through April 28th.
This special route focuses on the narrative of the "Sajuksin" (six martyred ministers) and the loyalist Eom Heung-do, who risked his life to bury King Danjong's body. It connects historical sites in Daegu and Gunwi-gun that were previously less known to the general public.
The "Wang-sa-nam" effect is transforming local tourism in Daegu. The city announced on the 20th that its specialized history tour is being extended to accommodate the influx of fans and history buffs. The tour's initial pilot on the 14th proved that the film's cinematic success could translate directly into foot traffic for regional heritage sites.
The itinerary is carefully curated to follow the emotional beats of the movie. It begins at Yukshinsa Shrine, which honors the six ministersβincluding Bak Paeng-nyeon and Seong Sam-munβwho remained loyal to the deposed King Danjong. The tour also visits Hamokjeong, a beautiful pavilion by the Nakdong River where King Injo is said to have stayed before ascending the throne.
A significant portion of the tour is dedicated to Eom Heung-do. According to historical records, Eom secretly buried King Danjong's body in the mountains when no one else dared to, then went into hiding. His descendants eventually settled in the Uihung-myeon area of Gunwi-gun, where they have maintained his grave for generations. Recent academic research suggests that the grave in Gunwi is indeed the most likely authentic resting place of this loyal official.
To support the local economy, the tour dates are synchronized with the traditional market days in Gunwi (the 3rd and 8th of every month). This allows visitors to experience the authentic atmosphere of a rural Korean market. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Small Enterprise and Market Service, Daegu City is providing every participant with a 5,000 won Onnuri gift certificate that can be used immediately at the market.
μνwanpan (wan-pan) is a shorthand for μμ ν맀wanjeon panmae (wan-jeon pan-mae), which literally translates to "complete sale." In modern Korean culture, it is used to describe products, tickets, or fashion items that sell out instantly due to high popularity or a "celebrity effect."
