The Gyeonggi Content Agency has announced a new initiative to provide comprehensive support for mid-budget films that feature Gyeonggi Province as their primary setting. This program aims to streamline the process for creators by offering a "one-stop" service that covers everything from initial planning to final screening.
Targeting films with production budgets between 1 billion and 5 billion KRW, the agency is looking for stories that capture the unique essence of Gyeonggi-do. This marks a shift from previous support models that often treated different stages of production as separate, disconnected phases.
By providing a continuous support bridge, the province hopes to encourage more high-quality storytelling centered on its local landscapes, history, and people. The initiative is part of a broader effort to boost the regional film industry and ensure that local stories reach a wider audience.
Applications for the first phase of this program are currently being accepted, focusing on the development of treatments and scripts that can eventually transition into full-scale production with provincial backing.
The Gyeonggi Content Agency is officially opening applications for its "Gyeonggi Film & Video One-Stop Support" project. This new scheme is specifically designed for "regionally specialized films"βworks where Gyeonggi Province serves as a core element of the narrative. To qualify, a film must either use the province as its primary subject matter or have at least 70% of its filming take place within the provincial borders.
Unlike previous programs that offered isolated grants for development or independent production, this new model operates on a two-year cycle. In the first year (2026), the agency will select three projects to receive planning and development support. In the second year (2027), one standout project from that trio will be selected for intensive production funding. This ensures that a promising idea has a clear path to becoming a finished movie.
Beyond just financial aid, the selected filmmakers will receive expert consulting to help attract outside investment. Once production is complete, the agency also plans to assist with distribution and theater screenings, completing the "one-stop" cycle. The total budget for the initial treatment selection phase is 85 million KRW.
Officials cited examples like the film 'The Man Who Lives with the King' (set in Yeongwol, Gangwon) or the drama 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' (set in Jeju) as the type of location-based storytelling they want to replicate for Gyeonggi-do. Whether it is a historical event, a specific local figure, or a modern-day neighborhood story, the goal is to find the "real stories" of the province. The application deadline is April 20, 2026.
μμ€ν± μ§μwonseutop jiwon (won-seutop ji-won) refers to "one-stop support." In a bureaucratic or business context in Korea, this means a system where multiple services or administrative steps are integrated into a single process so the applicant doesn't have to visit different departments or apply multiple times.
