Summary
A 38-year-old day laborer, identified as Mr. A, has been sentenced to three years in prison for defrauding 28 victims of approximately 79.44 million won. The scam primarily targeted fans of the massive trot star Lim Young-woong, as well as fans of the musical 'Memphis' and singer Psy.
Mr. A contacted victims via KakaoTalk, claiming to be a member of a concert planning team. He promised that he could secure tickets early because of his job, asking victims to send money along with their personal information. In reality, he had no such connections and was merely a temporary worker for a tent rental company.
Investigation revealed that Mr. A was a repeat offender who committed these crimes while on parole for a previous fraud conviction. Even while his trial was ongoing, he continued to seek out new victims to fund his living expenses and gambling habits.
The Seoul Eastern District Court emphasized the malicious nature of the crime, noting that the defendant showed no remorse and failed to compensate the victims. Along with the prison sentence, the court ordered Mr. A to repay the stolen funds to the victims.
