What it actually implies

인싸inssa is a shortened form of the English word 'Insider' (인사이더). In the Korean context, it refers to someone who gets along with everyone, stays on top of trends, and is always at the center of the action. It is the opposite of an 아싸assa (Outsider). While 'insider' in English often implies having secret information, in Korean, it is strictly about social popularity and energy.

When it sounds rude (and why)

Calling someone an 인싸inssa is generally a compliment, but calling someone an 아싸assa (the opposite) can be hurtful as it implies they are a loner or socially awkward. Also, avoid using 인싸inssa in formal business meetings or when talking to much older superiors, as it is strictly casual slang.

Do / Don’t checklist

  • Do use it to describe a friend who is the life of the party.
  • Do use it when someone knows all the latest memes.
  • Don’t use it in a professional email to a client.
  • Don’t assume it means someone who works 'inside' an office.
