Many beginners see the word kkot and try to pronounce the ㅊ sound at the end, or look at 있다itda and wonder why it doesn't sound like 'is-ta'. In Korean, while there are many final consonants, they all collapse into just 7 representative sounds when spoken.

Form (how to attach)

This sound occurs when the final consonant (Batchim) is , , or . Regardless of the complexity of the letter, the air is cut off at the back of the throat.

Meaning range (what it can/can’t mean)

It represents a 'stopped' K sound. You don't release a puff of air like in the English word 'kick'; you simply close the throat.

Register (neutral/polite)

This is a fundamental phonetic rule and applies to all registers of Korean speech.

Common mistakes (wrong → right)

Wrong: 부엌bueok (bu-eok-he) — releasing the 'h' sound.

This is the 'black hole' of Batchim. It sucks in ㄷ, ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅎㄷ, ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅎ. All of these are pronounced as a simple t sound at the end of a syllable.

Meaning range (what it can/can’t mean)

It is a stopped T sound. Your tongue touches the back of your upper teeth and stays there.

Common mistakes (wrong → right)

Wrong: mat (ma-se) — pronouncing the 's' sound.
Right: mat (mat) — ending with a 't' sound.
