What it actually implies
In Korean schools, the principal is the highest authority. While the job title is 교장gyojang (Principal), you must always append 선생님seonsaengnim (Teacher) to create the respectful title 교장선생님gyojangseonsaengnim. Using just 교장gyojang or 교장님gyojangnim can sound blunt or even dismissive in a face-to-face setting.
When it sounds rude (and why)
The biggest mistake is forgetting the subject honorific marker -(으)시--(eu)si- when describing the principal's actions. If you say 교장선생님이 왔다gyojangseonsaengnimi watda instead of 교장선생님께서 오셨다gyojangseonsaengnimkkeseo osyeotda, you are grammatically treating the principal as an equal or subordinate, which is a major social faux pas in a school environment.
Do / Don’t checklist
- DO use
께서kkeseo instead of이/가i/ga as the subject marker. - DO use
뵙다boepda (humble) instead of만나다mannada (neutral) when you are the one meeting them. - DON'T use honorifics for yourself. Never say
제가 하셨습니다jega hasyeotseupnida (I did it - honorific); say제가 했습니다jega haetseupnida.

교장선생님, 잠시 뵐 수 있을까요?gyojangseonsaengnim, jamsi boel su isseulkkayo? — Principal, may I see you for a moment?

Try using the 'Tone Ladder' today: when talking about the principal to a younger student, use 계셔gyesyeo, but when talking to a teacher or parent, always use 계십니다gyesipnida. Practice the distinction between 만나다mannada and 뵙다boepda to show you understand humble versus neutral verbs.
